In her chamber, Harley Haze is rehearsing a speech when Shay Sights, her stepmother, enters and listens in. Shay is shocked to hear that Harley was named valedictorian despite not being informed of it. As valedictorian, Harley acknowledges that she was anxious about having to speak at the graduation ceremony, so she remained silent. Public speaking is difficult for her. Shay tries several linguistic exercises to help Harley practice pronouncing words correctly, but they don't work. Next, Shay attempts to persuade Harley to attempt some tongue twisters. Shay points out that Harley's laughter indicates she's relaxing, which will help with the speech, but Harley is astonished and laughs at the statement. The main goal is to have fun! Shay goes on to say that Harley might simply need to work on strengthening her tongue in order to pronounce words more clearly. Shay begins with some basic exercises, such as telling Harley to lick her finger or press her tongue to the roof of her mouth, but she quickly gets motivated. There are a lot more enjoyable and playful methods if they genuinely want Harley to loosen up AND strengthen her tongue.
